Two thoughts on stocks in the news:

1. Even if I didn't have ideological issues with Wal-mart, I would still shop at Target since their stores are clean, well-stocked (with merchandise and helpful staff (at the one I frequent, their staff includes a disproportionately large number of hot blondes, furthering my store loyalty)), and with superior merch. As they grow, it will be interesting to see if they are able to keep this competitive advantage. Better yet, maybe they can merge with Costco and kick the evil empire's ass on both fronts.

2. Google has proven what is possible when you attract the best talent and then let them do their thing. Most of my friends are programmers and are telling me that the best and the brightest are trying to get jobs their. Google barely has to recruit, while the best programmers from other companies are dying to jump ship. While you are there, you are treated royally and encouraged to take risks and start pet projects (which is apparently how Google Maps was born) I believe the last time a company had that type of reputation as an employer was Microsoft in the early 90's. I wonder what ever happened to them...

Kevin,
I agree on TGT. Love to shop there; never go to WMT. As for GOOG, emulating MSFT in the early days is not such a bad idea. Take a look at how MSFT stock did from its IPO 'til the late 90s.
